CAST:
Sofea Lee - The Orphan Girl
TaeYang
TOP

There are other characters but I'm not sure how many will turn up so I won't write any here...

FOREWORDS:

She was left alone for the very first time... a foreign land, a foreign country... Dead? Was she dead? Hardly. She knew she was very much alive. There was only one thing in her mind. To seek revenge. But she was very lonely. Until she met him. He was so kind, yet she pushed him away. She could survive on her own. But he persisted. And she gave in. Then she met his friend. It was not love at first sight. The hatred was strong and intense, as intense as the heat of the sun. They were strangers who met for the first time. And yet, the hatred mounted until it reached sky high. Until one day, the revelation came. And they learned that no matter how strong the wall around the heart is, it could collapse with just the blink of an eye. And in the dark, they whispered, You'll Be the Death of Me... but I can't help falling in love with you...

=D Hows that? I hope it's interesting!

Please leave some comments!!! I'd love it! Reviews are greatly appreciated!!

Lots of love, DeeDee =D

Chapter 1 - “Come back you little thief!”

Post by deedee26 on 8/4/2009, 7:06 pm

It was an extremely cold night tonight. Nevertheless that didn’t stop her from going. She had to leave. Whoever said that home was the safest place was clearly a retard. Either that or he didn’t experience what she went through.

Leaving that home wasn’t as hard as she thought. It was in fact fairly easy. She waited until everyone had fallen asleep before grabbing her bag pack that she had packed the day before.

She grabbed her baseball hat that her dad had given for her 17th birthday and crept out quietly. She had no friends at that place. It was more of a prison than a place where they kept orphaned kids.

Everyone was sour and bitter. It was a miserable life she led ever since they placed her in that home. The gate creaked when she opened it. She closed her eyes, hoping and praying that no one noticed. She listened intently. All was quiet except for a few cars now and then.

She was free at last. Free to do whatever she wanted, free to be herself. She shuddered as the wind blew strongly on her face. It was almost winter and she was badly wrapped in a thin jacket that only protected her slightly.

She had no money and she didn’t know the way around the city. Aside from the time spent in the orphanage, this was in reality her first time in Korea.

She walked quickly with her head down avoiding the people as they passed her. She was not scared. The orphanage had taught her how to survive and she was determined not to die before exploring the city. And before finding him.

Her stomach suddenly grumbled. She sighed. She was hungry. She looked at the watch on her wrist to see that it was 10 minutes past midnight. And yet, the street was full with people. She looked on. How carefree they seemed to be! And careless too. She saw money hanging and dangling from their pockets and hands.

She knew it was wrong, but she had to do it. She had no choice. She studied the street and found her target. He was alone. And he was not facing her. He was smartly dressed in a black suit with a pair of colorful sneakers. She looked at them with longing. She wanted a pair so bad. Hers was torn and there were holes everywhere.

She shook her head. Focus! She told herself. She headed closer to him to see that he had placed his wallet in his back pocket. It was jutting out a little at the top. She knew she could take it without him noticing.

She pulled her hat down even more and pretended to be looking at the club he was about to enter.

She stood back to back and placed her hand behind her back. She felt for his wallet. There! She smiled in triumph. Slowly, she pulled it out of his pocket. It was almost out when he turned around.

“HEY!” He yelled in shock.

She stared at him wide eyed. She tugged and grasped it when it came out. And then she ran, as fast as her legs could carry her. But not fast enough.

“Come back you little thief!” The man yelled again. He extended his hand and grabbed her arm. Her hat fell and revealed her long black hair.

He spun her around and came face to face with his captive. His eyes instantly widened in surprise.

Chapter 2 - “Aren’t you too pretty to be stealing?”

Post by deedee26 on 8/5/2009, 2:35 pm

“Let me go!” She said trying to struggle free. Fortunately for her, she had learned Korean in that damned place. Although she did not know much, it was enough to be used daily.

“Aren’t you too pretty to be stealing?” He asked. For indeed, she was beautiful. Her black hair was so smooth and silky that it shined under the neon sign nearby. And her eyes were big and brown surrounded by thick lashes that curled beautifully. Her lips were lush and her cheeks were tinged pink from the cold.

But she wore a frown on her face. “Let me go!” She said again.

He ignored her request and held her more tightly. “What are you doing out here in the middle of the night?”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “None of your business.” She snapped. She wondered why he was wearing a shade even in the middle of the night. Maybe he was blind, she thought. No, that wasn’t likely. He chased her, after all.

“No?” He said. He looked at her attire. Torn shoes and a thin jacket. And she was shivering.

“You must be really cold in that.”

“So?”

They were standing in front of a coffee shop. And it was still open. He glanced at it.

“Let’s go inside.” He suggested, still holding her arm.

“I’m not going anywhere with you.”

He rolled his eyes. “Right. And you much prefer it if you freeze to death.”

She gritted her teeth. “Like I said, I’m not going anywhere with you.”

“I‘m going to buy some food for you. You look like you could use some.”

He said food. That was enough to produce the loudest grumble from her stomach.

He laughed. “And I can hear that I’m right.”

She gripped the straps of her bag tightly and sighed. Well, he did offer. It wasn’t like he could poison the food.

She started to head towards the shop when he pulled her back.

“What?” She said impatiently.

“My wallet.” He said and extended his hand.

She placed it on his palm and headed once again to the coffee shop.

Once inside, the coffee aroma hit her hard and she began sniffing hungrily. She walked towards the counter and ordered a large sandwich and a cup of cappuccino. Her captor ordered only a cup of coffee.

“That’s it?” He asked her.

She nodded her head and looked down, suddenly very aware of his gaze on her.

She devoured her sandwich like it was the best thing she ever had. She completely forgot the man before her until after she was done. She realized that he was still staring at her, his coffee untouched.

“Aren’t you going to drink that?” She asked.

“Nope.”

“Why did you order then?” She was slowly sipping her cappuccino.

He shrugged.

“Man, you must be rich.” She muttered mostly to herself but he overheard.

“Not rich. Just don’t like coffee.” He said. “You can have it if you want.”

She reached over and took his cup. And drank it all at once.

“You must be thirsty.” He commented.

She nodded her head and finally took a good look at him. Once he had taken his shade off, he appeared to be much younger than she thought. Maybe only a few years older than she was. She studied his face and found that he was not at all bad looking. You could even consider him to be attractive, if you were into the rich looking type.

He smirked. “Done looking at me yet?”

She blushed, her cheeks reddened slightly. “There’s not much to look at.” She said nonchalantly.

He chuckled. “So how old are you?” He asked.

“How old are you?” She asked back.

“I asked you first.”

“So? It’s not like you’re gonna get a prize or anything.”

“There’s no reasoning with you is there?” He sighed.

And she shook her head.

“I’m TOP.” He finally introduced himself.

She snorted. “TOP? What kind of a name is that?”

He sniggered. “Not so smart after all then. It’s a nickname.”

“I knew that.” She quickly replied. Was she supposed to feel grateful that he fed her? She knew she could do it on her own, if only she wasn’t caught.

“Let’s go.” He said when she was done. She followed him until he stopped once again in front of the coffee shop.

“So, where do you go from here?” He asked. He was suddenly aware of the bag she was carrying with her. Did she run away from home?

“I can take care of myself.” She said. And that meant sleeping on the bench somewhere in the nearby park. Then, as an afterthought, she quickly muttered a short thank you.

“No problem.” He said. “You sure you’re going to be ok?”

She briskly nodded and went her way, leaving him on his own. He wasn’t entirely convinced. She didn’t look like she knew where she was going. He sighed once again. Tonight did not turn out the way he had planned. He jumped into his Mercedes and followed after her.

Chapter 3 - “Don’t get too comfortable.”

Post by deedee26 on 8/6/2009, 12:46 pm

“Where are you going?” He asked when he rolled down his window.

“You’re still here?” She said frustrated. “I said thank you, didn’t I?”

She was avoiding his question. Now he knew for certain that she had nowhere to go.

“You don’t know where you’re going.” He said as he stepped out of the car.

“And that is none of your business.”

“It’s not safe for a girl like you to be walking alone at night.”

“Oh?” She raised her eyebrow. “And I’m safe with you?”

“Yes, of course.” He said. “At least let me drive you home.”

Home. That was a place long forgotten. She didn’t even remember what it looked like anymore. Ever since her imprisonment in the orphanage.

“I’m fine.” She said firmly.

But he was quick to grab her arm.

“Why are you so stubborn?” He asked. She was getting on his nerve and he had very little patience left.

“Why do you care?” She suddenly shouted at him. “Look, I don’t know you and I don’t trust you. And I don’t need your help.”

“Oh yeah?” He said challengingly. “And you’d rather trust those guys over there?”

He pointed to a group of rough looking thugs down the street. They were staring at them unpleasantly.

She shuddered. She WAS afraid. And this guy in front of her was far better in comparison. She sighed. Put your pride aside, she said to herself. Maybe this guy really wanted to help.

“Ok fine. I don’t know where I’m going.” She admitted dejectedly.

“You ran away, didn’t you?”

She merely nodded.

“What were you planning on doing?” He asked.

“To find the park and sleep on the bench.” She replied with her head held high.

He was impressed. She had guts. And she was so proud of herself. So rebellious, he thought.

“Right. Come with me then.” He invited and opened the passenger door for her.

“Where?”

“To my apartment.”

She looked at him hesitantly. She was not sure what he was playing at.

“I won’t harm you.” He said as if reading her thought.

“Right.” She said and climbed into the car.

The ride was a silent one. She was lost in her thoughts, and so was he. It only took half an hour to reach his apartment.

“You live here?” she asked surprised. It was a shabby looking building. Someone who owned a Mercedes shouldn’t be living in such a place.

“Why? Surprised?”

“More like shock. You have a Mercedes. I don’t get why you’re living here.”

“Long story.” He said. “But don’t let the outside fool you.”

He took her up to the fifth floor and opened the door to his apartment. Now she was surprised.

“Not bad.” She commented once she saw how cozy and comfortable the living room was.

“Glad you like it.” He said with a smile.

“Hyung!” Someone suddenly called out. His figure appeared from the kitchen and looked at her suspiciously.

She returned his gaze and studied his physique. He was shorter than TOP but far more muscular. And he wore his hair in a Mohawk. His eyes were small that she was sure disappeared whenever he laughed. Nevertheless, his first impression did not make a big impact on her.

“Who’s this?” He asked.

“Tae ah, she’s our guest.” TOP replied and scratched his head. He seemed nervous.

“Guest?” He raised his eyebrow. “You mean, overnight guest?”

TOP nodded awkwardly.

“And what’s her name?” He asked TOP.

She rolled her eyes. “Hello, I’m standing right here. You can ask me you know.”

However, TOP was quick to reply. “Actually, I don’t know.”

The other guy’s face contorted in frustration. “Hyung, you brought home a stranger?”

“You know what? I didn’t want to be here either.” She said in annoyance. She thought she disliked TOP, but she found his friend more aggravating.

TOP stepped in between the two.

“Whoa, ok guys, stop it.” He said. He then turned to her. “Tell us your name.”

“I’m Sofea.” She said at last.

His face showed interest but he made no comment.

“Ok…” TOP said. “Sofea, this is TaeYang. TaeYang, this is Sofea.” He introduced them.

They stared at one another. Why was he so hostile?

“Look TOP, I appreciate what you’re trying to do but your friend here obviously doesn’t want me here, so I think I’m going to go.” She said and headed towards the door.

“No no!” TOP stopped her. “Wait here. I’ll talk to him.”

She waited while he pulled TaeYang aside. They spoke in rapid Korean and she was only able to catch a few words now and then.

Finally, TaeYang headed to a room presumably his bedroom and TOP straightened up and smiled at her.

“Welcome to our home.” He said and spread his arm.

“Really?” She asked cautiously.

“Yea.” TOP nodded. “Don’t worry about him. He doesn’t like strangers.”

“I can see that.” Sofea said sarcastically.

“He’ll get used to it.” TOP reassured. “C’mon, I’ll show you where you’ll be sleeping.”

TOP led her into a room. The very room in which TaeYang was in.

“Here?” Sofea asked.

“Don’t get too comfortable.” TaeYang sneered as he grabbed a few of his belongings and headed out.

“Sorry.” TOP apologized. “This is his room. We only have two bedrooms and since mine’s bigger, I told him to sleep there.”

“Oh. Ok.” She said as she placed her bag on his bed. The room was tidy, she thought, for a guy who was unfriendly.

“Get some sleep.” TOP said. “We’ll figure everything out tomorrow. And really, don’t worry about him.”

She nodded and TOP left the room, closing the door lightly behind him. She could hear muffled sounds through the wall and it sounded as if they were arguing.

It wasn’t her fault she was here. He had no right to blame her, he barely even knew her. She glanced, taking in her surrounding. His room smelt of… well, his cologne. It was refreshing. And it was nice. With that thought in mind, she drifted to a dreamless sleep.

Chapter 4 - “What ARE you good at?”

Post by deedee26 on 8/7/2009, 12:26 pm

Wasn’t this supposed to be a dreamless sleep? What was that sound? Her eyes fluttered open. The door to the room was opening. She quickly closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep.

She could hear his footsteps and his slow breathing. She felt his presence as he stopped by the bed. What was he going to do? She waited in vain, afraid to open her eyes. She was tired. She didn’t want to fight with him. She hadn’t been sleeping long; only for a few hours. At least that was what it seemed to her.

Was he staring at her? She wasn’t sure. She was too drowsy. Soon, she fell asleep again not noticing him leaving the room.

She woke up early the next day and wondered if she dreamt it all. She shook her head. Nope, the bed was too comfortable to be a dream. And then she remembered last night. She knew it was TaeYang. What was he doing in here? She snorted. This was his room after all. Maybe he had forgotten something.

She stood up and headed towards the mirror to fix her hair. Then, she slowly opened the door and left the room.

It was quiet. Where were TOP and TaeYang? She went to the kitchen and came face to face with TaeYang.

“Where’s TOP?” She asked haughtily. She didn’t have to be polite. At least not to someone like him. That was the rule.

“Out.” Was his curt reply. He was eating cereal and reading a newspaper.

She narrowed her eyes even though she knew he couldn’t see her. The nerve of him! He didn’t even offer her any food.

“Did he say anything?” She tried again. This time, he completely ignored her.

She huffed angrily. This guy was unbearable! She went into the living room and turned on the TV.

“Can you turn it down?” He said crossly from the kitchen.

“Why?”

“It’s my apartment.”

“So?”

He exited the kitchen and grabbed the remote from her. She stood and glared at him.

“So, if you want to carry on staying here, I suggest you go by my rules.” He said coldly.

They were staring at each other for a good five minutes before TOP finally appeared holding a paper bag.

“Whoa.” He said and rushed over. “What’s going on?”

They ignored him. The tension was so sharp that you could probably cut it with a knife.

“Tae, go get dressed. We have to go.” He said again and pushed him away. He gave her one last glare before going into the room.

TOP then turned to Sofea.

“You ok?” He asked her.

She nodded. “I can’t stand him!”

“Trust me, it’ll get easier.” TOP said. “Had a good night sleep?”

“Yeah.” She replied. Then she shifted uncomfortably. She wasn’t very good at expressing her gratitude.

“Uh… listen. I never got the chance to say thanks.” She said nervously.

TOP laughed. “That’s ok. You can stay here as long as you like.”

“Not long enough, I hope.” TaeYang muttered as he came out from the room.

She pretended as if she didn’t hear him.

“Sofea, we have to go now. I’ll explain everything later when we get back. Here’s breakfast.” He handed her the paper bag and they left.

She ate the croissant that he had bought for her and took a quick shower. She couldn’t leave the house. She had no money. She then decided to explore the apartment.

She saw a door opposite her bedroom door. She opened it and turned on the lights. She gasped in surprise. It looked like a studio. There was a keyboard and a few mics along with the sound system and other gadgets she couldn’t identify.

“They must be musicians.” She said to herself. She stroked the keyboard lovingly. It had been so long since she last played one.

She sat and played for hours suddenly remembering all the songs that her mom used to teach her.

She smiled in content when she was finally satisfied. She was surprised to find that it was almost 5pm. The guys would be back soon, she thought.

She watched some TV and sure enough, ten minutes later, the door to the apartment opened and revealed TOP.

“Hi.” He said with a smile.

“Hey.” She replied.

TaeYang stepped in without a sound. He headed straight towards the kitchen.

“How was your day?” TOP asked.

She shrugged. “Ok. I didn’t do anything much.”

“That’s pretty obvious.” TaeYang said. TOP glanced at him in confusion.

“You know, the least you could do is cook something.” He added.

She glared at him. There was a lot of glaring whenever TaeYang was around.

“Tae ah…” TOP started.

“No hyung,” TaeYang interrupted. “She’s staying here isn’t she? She could at least do something.”

She was about to open her mouth and retort something clever when TOP cut in.

“It’s ok. I’ll cook.” He said and went to the kitchen. His mistake was leaving the two of them alone.

He knew he wasn’t much of a cook so he made them ramen. They ate in silence until TaeYang left the kitchen.

“I’m sorry.” Sofea finally said.

“Sorry? About what?” TOP asked while slurping his noodle.

“He was right.” She said looking down. “I should’ve done something.”

“No.” TOP said. “Forget what he said, you’re the guest after all.”

She shook her head. “I feel terrible. Maybe I would have felt better if you left me on the street.”

TOP made no comment. He didn’t know what to say to that. He didn’t know her past after all.

“I’m sorry.” She said again. “It’s just I… I don’t know how to cook.”

Someone snorted at the door. It was TaeYang of course. Who else would it be?

“No wonder.” He scorned. “What ARE you good at?”

Chapter 5 - “Don’t tell me you don’t have parents.”

Post by deedee26 on 8/10/2009, 12:40 pm

She stood up and pushed him against the wall.

“Would you back up off of me, man?” She yelled.

TOP held her and pulled her away.

“She’s right Tae. Cool it.” TOP warned.

He glowered at her before grabbing an apple and returning to the living room.

“What IS wrong with him?” Sofea asked angrily.

TOP smiled nervously. “I don’t think it’s my place to tell. Maybe he’ll tell you someday.”

She snorted. “I don’t know if you’ve been living in another planet but have you seen him? He barely talks to me let alone look at me. I don’t think he’s going to be telling me any story anytime soon.”

TOP laughed. “C’mon. Let’s go watch some TV.”

They cleared the table and entered the living room. TaeYang was there, reading an extremely thick book.

“You can read?” Sofea asked feigning shock.

“Unlike you.” He muttered.

TOP shook his head. These two will be the death of him.

“So,” He started. “Why don’t you tell me more about yourself? Before you took up stealing.”

“Stealing?” TaeYang said, sitting up.

“Oh yea.” TOP said. “I forgot to tell you how I met her.”

“Yea, it might have slipped from your mind.” TaeYang said staring at his hyung.

“Well, she was trying to steal my wallet but since she was so unprofessional, I caught her.” TOP said teasingly.

“You’re a thief?” TaeYang questioned sharply.

“Just once.” She muttered.

“Hyung! You brought home a thief?” He exclaimed.

“Tae, relax! We don’t know the whole story alright? Look at her. Does she look like a thief to you?” TOP said.

TaeYang mumbled something incoherent and returned to his book.

Sofea cleared her throat. “I’ve never stolen before. That was my first time. I’m very bad at it I guess, since I got caught.”

TOP chuckled. “That’s true. So, where do you come from? You don’t look Korean.”

She rolled her eyes. “Gee, what gives me away?”

“Your eyes.” TaeYang replied abruptly. He closed his mouth. Did he just answer her question? Pleasantly?

She looked at him strangely. Did he just talk to me? She thought.

“TaeYang’s right.” TOP said. “Your eyes are a dead giveaway. They’re bigger than mine. And MUCH bigger than TaeYang’s.” He joked.

“Hyung!” TaeYang said with a frown.

“Sorry man.” TOP replied. “It is true.”

She laughed. That was the first time she laughed in so many years. She thought she had forgotten how to laugh. TOP stared at her fascinated. Everything about her screamed beauty.

TaeYang too, was fascinated although he did not portray it on his face. She looked so much like HER, he thought. And it hurt.

“I’m only half Korean.” She said finally.

“Ah.” TOP said understandingly. “Of course. What’s the other half? Your skin tone’s a bit different.”

“I’m half Malaysian.” She said again.

“Malaysian?” TOP said. “Cool.”

She thought he looked confused. “What’s the matter?”

“He doesn’t know where Malaysia is.” TaeYang said, rolling his eyes.

“No!” TOP cut in. “Of course I know. It’s… somewhere in this world.”

She giggled. “I’m Asian.”

“So, it’s somewhere in Asia then.” TOP said nodding his head.

“Where are your parents?” TaeYang suddenly asked.

She gave a start. Parents? His voice was so sharp and so accusing that he brought back those memories of the life she once had.

He had reminded her once again of that day. The day she tried so hard to forget. But it came rushing to her from the very back of her mind as if it was there all along. Her eyes were glossy. She was going to cry again. The waterfall would pour soon.

They saw the change on her face. TOP looked on, feeling concerned. TaeYang looked guilty, if only slightly. But he wasn’t going to stop asking. Why would he care if she cried?

“Where are your parents?” He asked again. This time, the tears did fall one by one. She looked straight ahead, ashamed to look at either one of them.

“Don’t tell me you don’t have parents.” He said mockingly.

His words were so cruel that they stabbed her heart and broke it into many pieces. She ran to the bedroom and collapsed on the bed.

“Sofea!” TOP called after her.

She cried. She let it all out. The sadness, the frustration, the anger that had been bottling up inside of her for far too long. This life was so different from the one she used to lead. She was happy then. Now, she had turned into a bitter person. She had grown up too fast.

She took a photograph out from her bag and stared at it. Her parents were smiling at her, and so was she. She was wearing the baseball hat. It was her 17th birthday. More tears fell. It was as if a dam broke and released all the water that was trapped.

She hated feeling vulnerable. But that was what life had made her into. She cried herself to sleep.

She was a light sleeper. She heard him entering the room again later that night and stopping beside her. This time he stayed longer. She wanted to open her eyes and tell him to go away but she resisted. She didn’t want to see him. She was so tired of him.

He took the photograph from her grasp and stared at it. It was quite long before she felt it in her hands again. He sighed.

“Miahnae.” He said quietly. “I’m sorry.”

Chapter 6 - “You’re not going to expose me are you?”

Post by deedee26 on 8/13/2009, 6:13 pm

Her eyes were red and puffy when she woke up the next morning. She didn’t want to leave the room. But her stomach said otherwise.

She opened the door softly and headed for the kitchen. She found TOP and TaeYang conversing quietly. They stopped as soon as she entered.

TOP gave her a small smile while TaeYang looked indifferent.

“Morning.” TOP said.

She gave a sad smile in return and grabbed a banana on the counter.

TOP was nudging TaeYang to say something. He was poking him for quite some time before he sighed.

“I’m sorry.” He said finally.

She looked at him. Did he look sorry? She thought she saw something in his eyes but it was gone when she looked again.

She nodded her head to show that she had forgiven him. She knew, after last night’s apology that he was not a bad person. Life had turned him bitter, just like her.

“Yay!” TOP cheered. “Alright, this is good. Now we can ALL finally get along.”

She took a seat at the table and glanced at TaeYang. It didn’t seem as if he wanted to.

“What are you guys up to today?” She asked them.

“Nothing.” TOP replied. Then he looked at his watch. “Oh damn! I’m late again!”

He scrambled to his feet and shouted a quick goodbye. He left them alone again. The silence was deafening. It was very uncomfortable. She ate her banana silently while he sipped his coffee.

“Thanks for letting me stay in your room.” She said quietly after a while.

He grunted in response. “I didn’t have a choice.”

“Oh.”

“Why were you stealing?” He finally asked. She looked up. She was surprised to find that curiosity was etched on his face.

Maybe it was time to tell the truth, she thought.

“I didn’t have any money.”

“What were you doing out in the middle of the night anyway?”

She hesitated. “I ran away.” The truth was probably best in this situation. “From the orphanage.”

TaeYang nodded his head. Now he finally understood why she avoided last night’s question.

“Did they treat you badly?”

She rolled up her sleeves and her jeans to reveal bruises of many colors. He was astonished to find that he couldn’t find her skin at all. His eyes had widened in shock.

“Wow. That’s… pretty bad.” He commented.

She shrugged it off. “This is nothing compared to what the others got.”

He shuffled the newspaper. “They’re looking for you.”

“Who?”

“The orphanage. It’s in the newspaper today.” He said and read it aloud. “Missing. Sofea Lee. If spotted, contact Chang Orphanage.”

“You’re not going to expose me are you?”

He didn’t know how to answer to that. Would he tell on her? He remembered her bruises. She suffered so much already.

She studied his expression. “’Cause it’s ok if you do. After all, I’m not really welcomed here.” She said and headed towards the living room.

They didn’t speak again for the rest of the day. Nor did they see each other. He was cooped up in TOP’s room while she stayed in the living room, watching some TV.

TOP returned a few hours later carrying a big plastic bag.

“Oh hey.” He said when he saw her on the couch. “I bought us some food.”

“Great!” Sofea said with a smile.

“Tae ah!” He called out. The door opened and out stepped TaeYang.

“Ah hyung!” He said. “You’re home.” And followed TOP into the kitchen.

“Were you in that room the whole day?” TOP asked.

“Yea…” TaeYang replied slowly.

“You didn’t talk to her man?”

TaeYang shrugged. “No. Why should I? She’s not my guest.”

TOP shook his head. Then he lowered his voice. “Look Tae, I know how much it hurts ok? But at least make an effort.”

TaeYang held up his hand. “Hyung please. I don’t want to talk about it. I let her stay in my room. That’s as much as I can do. I don’t have to be friendly.”

She was standing by the doorway when the conversation took place. Hurt? Did something happen to him? Was that why he was so hostile to her? Why her? What did she do?

TOP saw her and beckoned her to come closer. “Come. Let’s eat.”

The other two sat in silence while TOP told them some jokes.

They laughed feebly.

“Alright then.” TOP said awkwardly. “I can see that it’s not funny.”

She smiled. He was always trying to lighten up the mood.

“Ah yes.” TOP said as if recalling something. “Have you seen your face in the newspaper today?”

“Me?” Sofea asked. TOP nodded. “Yes, I did.”

“And?”

“And… nothing. I’m not going back there.” She said. “Unless… you want to hand me in.”

TOP glanced at TaeYang. He was eating his bowl of rice silently, ignoring the conversation.

“Of course we won’t.” TOP said on behalf of himself and TaeYang.

She smiled gratefully. She was sure he wouldn’t. But what about TaeYang? He obviously hated her.

She cleared her throat. “Guys,” she started. “I probably should tell you all about me.”

Chapter 7 - “You need talent if you want to audition.”

Post by deedee26 on 8/16/2009, 3:39 am

“That’d be nice.” TaeYang said sneeringly.

“Well, you obviously know where I come from.”

TOP nodded.

“I’ve been in that orphanage for three years now.” She didn’t have to reveal everything. Just some parts that were relevant to the tale.

TaeYang was listening intently too although he pretended as if he didn’t care.

“They beat you up in there. That’s why I ran away. I couldn’t stand it.” She said and gazed at the wall in front of her.

The other two sat in silence. They had no idea what to say.

“I don’t know anyone here.” She continued. “All my friends and relatives are back in Malaysia.”

“Aren’t they looking for you?” TOP asked.

They probably thought I’m dead by now, she thought. “No. I doubt they are.” She answered.

“Is this your first time in Korea?” TOP asked again.

“Yeah.” She replied. Then she gave him a sad smile. “You know. It’s funny. I’ve always imagined it to be way different and way more pleasant.”

“But that was before… my parents died.” She added quietly. She wasn’t going to cry anymore. She will get her revenge. Soon.

“But why are you sent here?” TaeYang asked persistently. “Why not Malaysia?”

Yes, why not? She thought. Because that bastard wanted to keep me away. Because everyone thought I was dead, three years ago. She didn’t tell him this of course. She couldn’t. Not yet.

She shrugged, “I don’t know.”

“So what are you going to do now?” TOP asked while finishing his rice.

“Good question.” She said with a smile. “Since I don’t have any money, I don’t think I’ll be doing much.”

“You mean you’re just going to stay here, at our apartment?” TaeYang asked incredulously. His tone was always so sharp with her, so different from the way he spoke to TOP.

“I wasn’t done.” She snapped at him. “I saw a commercial on TV today.”

“Oh?”

“Yea. They’re giving you a salary for becoming a trainee.”

“What are you talking about?” TaeYang asked impatiently.

“YG audition!” She said jumping up. “They want trainees! And they’ll pay you if you undergo all the hard work. And then you’ll get to be famous.” And then I’ll get my revenge, she thought.

TOP and TaeYang glanced at each other. YG?

“What?” She asked when she saw the looks on their faces.

TaeYang jeered. “You need talent if you want to audition.”

“I know.” She snapped.

“And? You can’t do anything. You said so yourself.”

“You don’t know me ok?” She yelled at him. They were standing nose to nose again.

So close. So full of hatred.

“GUYS!” TOP shouted finally. “Stop it.”

Then he turned to Sofea. “Go for it.” He said with a smile.

“Really?” She asked her eyes wide.

“Yea.” He said. “Who knows? Maybe you will get accepted.”

“Thanks!” She said happily.

“You won’t get in you know.” TaeYang replied carelessly.

She narrowed her eyes at him. “And why not?”

He pointed at the newspaper. “Hello, you were in the newspaper remember? Don’t you think if you go out there, people will recognize you? And I’m sure the YG staff would be more than happy to send you back.”

She gazed at him. He was right. No one could see her right now. She would have to wait until everything died down first.

“Tae’s right.” TOP said. “You should probably wait first. Maybe you can audition in two weeks.”

TaeYang gave her a smug smile. She returned it with one of her famous glare.

“I can’t.” She said. “Next week is the last week. If I don’t go soon, I’ll miss my chance.”

“Why YG?” TaeYang asked harshly. “There are other companies. And besides, what CAN you do?”

“I don’t have to explain myself to you.” She said haughtily.

“Guys please!” TOP sighed. “Look, it’s almost midnight. Why don’t we just go get some rest?”

TaeYang left without a word. TOP and Sofea stayed and cleared the kitchen before heading off to bed as well.

He didn’t come that night. Or maybe he did. She wasn’t so sure. She was worried about the audition and the thought of being sent back if she really did go. It wasn’t a pleasant night for her. Even the nice smell of his cologne couldn’t keep away the images that haunted her, the dreams that she wished never appeared.

She was about to step into the bathroom the next day when TOP rushed over.

“We have to go now.” He said and quickly said his goodbye. TaeYang followed suit.

She was in the bathroom when the door finally closed.

“You ok man?” TOP asked TaeYang in the elevator.

“Yea.” He replied quietly.

“You look tired. Have you been getting any sleep?”

“Just a little.” TaeYang admitted.

“You gotta let it go man.” TOP said. He hated seeing him like this. TaeYang was like the younger brother he never had. And he was determined to look out for him, no matter what happened.

“It’s in the past.” He added.

TaeYang merely nodded. What could he say to that? Just because it was in the past, he had to let it go? No. He was going to hang on to it, if only for a little while longer.

Chapter 8 - “Does that mean I’m a trainee now?”

Post by deedee26 on 8/18/2009, 8:00 am

“Hyung!” He said suddenly. “I forgot my phone!”

TOP searched his pocket and laughed. “So did I.”

“C’mon, let’s go get them.” TaeYang said and they headed back up to their apartment.

Upon entering, they heard a soft sound.

“Hyung, do you hear that?” TaeYang asked.

“Yea. It seems to be coming from the bathroom.” TOP said. He fetched his phone and stood outside the bathroom door.

TaeYang came closer. “It’s her.”

TOP nodded. “And she’s singing.”

They listened. She had switched the song, now singing something that possessed higher notes.

“Is that Mariah Carey she’s singing?” TaeYang asked uncertainly.

“Yea man.” TOP agreed. “Man, she can sing.”

He took out his phone and recorded her voice. Luckily for him, she sang the whole song before changing into a different tune.

“C’mon, let’s go.” He said when he could no longer hear the shower running.

“Why did you record her voice?” TaeYang asked in the car.

TOP gave him a knowing look.

“You’re kidding?” TaeYang asked disbelievingly.

“Nope. We can give it a try.”

TaeYang rolled his eyes. “Why are you doing all this for her?”

“I don’t know… maybe ‘cause I feel sorry for her.” TOP replied.

And he did feel sorry for her. He knew deep down she was a good person, even the she fought with TaeYang a lot.

Back at the apartment, Sofea was playing with the piano. She was relieved to find that she hadn’t forgotten. She was going to play until the boys returned. But suddenly, she remembered what TaeYang said. “You know, the least you could do is cook something.” That was what he had said wasn’t it?

Reluctantly, she left the room and headed towards the kitchen. What was she supposed to cook? She didn’t know any Korean cuisine, except that tofu dish. She smiled. Yes, it couldn’t be that hard.

She was wrong of course. She burnt the rice on the first try. It was overcooked. On the second try, she had put too much water. The rice was mushy. She sighed. She was beginning to think that maybe TaeYang was right. What WAS she good at?

She was in the kitchen when they returned.

“Sofea!” TOP called out.

“Here.” She said appearing from the kitchen.

“What were you doing in there?”

“Uh… trying to cook something.” She replied sheepishly.

“Any luck?” He asked with a smile. She shook her head.

TOP laughed. “That’s ok. Actually, there’s someone I want you to meet.”

She looked at him suspiciously. “It’s not someone I know is it?”

He shook his head. “No no. I promise it’s not someone from… you know.”

She smiled. “Ok then. Where is that someone?”

“TaeYang! Bring him in.” TOP instructed. A few seconds later, they stepped into her view.

She didn’t need an explanation. She knew fully well who he was. Her jaw dropped in surprise.

“Close it.” TaeYang said horridly. “You’re making a very bad first impression.”

She snapped her mouth shut and frowned at him. Trust him to make the situation embarrassing for her!

She bowed at the guest. “Anyonghasaeyo.”

“Anyonghasaeyo.” He replied with a smile. He looked friendly enough.

“I can’t believe you’re here.” She said nervously. He laughed.

“Sofea, meet Mr. Yang. He’s the head of YG entertainment.” TOP introduced.

“What are you doing here?” She asked him politely.

“Well, they said I should meet you because you’re just what we’re looking for.” He replied with a smile.

“They?” She asked raising her eyebrow. She glanced at TaeYang.

He scowled. “I did not say anything.”

“Didn’t you?” She asked again.

“No wait.” He replied arrogantly. “I did say something. I told him NOT to come ‘cause there isn’t much to see. He’ll be wasting his time. But TOP hyung insisted.”

“Tae ah.” TOP warned. TaeYang rolled his eyes and went into the kitchen. TOP was on her side now. After all, he brought her home.

“So, uh…” Sofea started. “I’m what you’re looking for?”

Mr. Yang nodded. “At least that’s what TOP said.”

“You should hear her sing. It’s amazing.” TOP said.

She stared at him confusedly. “When did YOU hear me sing?”

TOP smiled at her guiltily. “This morning.”

“This morning?”

“Yea. We forgot our phones so we came back up when you were in the bathroom. And we heard you sing.”

She covered her face. “Oh gosh! This is so embarrassing!”

“Actually, I have to say you were pretty good.” Mr. Yang replied lightly.

“But YOU’VE never heard me sing.”

TOP took out his phone. “I recorded it.”

“What?” She asked dismally.

“You said you wanted to audition! And since you can’t go out yet, I brought the audition to you.” TOP explained.

“You’re so sweet.” She said with a smile. “But…”

“No buts.” TOP said firmly. “You’re going to sing for him right now.”

“Yes, I can’t wait to hear it.” Mr. Yang said in anticipation.

“Uh… ok.” She said nervously.

And she sang her heart out. She chose a song that she thought would impress Mr. Yang. TOP was smiling when she was done while Mr. Yang sat with an expressionless face. Meanwhile, TaeYang was in the kitchen when she sang. He would never admit it, but he thought she had a lovely voice. Not that he would ever say that to her.

TOP cheered. She bit her bottom lip anxiously. “Well?”

Finally, Mr. Yang’s face broke into a smile. “That was fantastic.”

“Really?” She asked surprised.

He nodded. “I think you would be a great asset to the company. We’ve never had this kind of voice before. I think you would go very far.”

She beamed. She was so happy. “Does that mean I’m a trainee now?”

Chapter 9 - “What did I ever do to you?”

Post by deedee26 on 8/20/2009, 4:48 am

“She can’t be a trainee.” TaeYang suddenly said as he appeared from the kitchen.

Damn him! Why was he always ruining her moment?

“And why not?” She asked angrily.

He showed her the newspaper. “Chang Orphanage, remember?”

She pursed her lips. She had no answer to that.

“Chang Orphanage?” Mr. Yang said. “No wonder you look familiar. You were in the newspaper. Did you run away from there?”

She nodded miserably. What was she going to do? She glanced at TaeYang. He was smiling smugly. Of course, what else would he do?

“I don’t blame you.” Mr. Yang said. “I heard they treat the kids really bad in there.”

She nodded again. “Yes, they do. That’s why I can’t go back there.”

Mr. Yang sat in deep thoughts. “Hmm…” he said finally. “The company can always adopt you.”

Her eyes widened in surprise. “Really? And that wouldn’t be a problem?”

He laughed. “I’ll make a few phone calls tonight and TOP, will you take her to see Mrs. Kim tomorrow? Make sure she gets her badge.”

“Of course.” TOP said.

“Tomorrow?” She asked.

“You start tomorrow.” Mr. Yang said. The joy was clearly portrayed on her face. Children were always enthusiastic, always wanting to experience something new.

“Thank you so much!” She yelled happily. She couldn’t believe it. Her luck had finally changed, at last.

“Can you play any instrument? Mr. Yang asked.

“I can play the piano.”

“We have a keyboard.” TOP said. “Why don’t you show Mr. Yang what you can do?”

TaeYang frowned at him. “Hyung, that’s my keyboard.”

He was acting like a child, he knew that. But he did not like her and hence, he did not have to be nice to her.

“She can borrow it for a while, can’t she?” TOP said and led her and Mr. Yang into the room.

TaeYang followed. He told himself that he went only because he wanted to make sure she didn’t do anything to his keyboard, not because he wanted to hear her play.

She played well. TaeYang knew it was a difficult piece. He himself had practiced it for ages before getting it right. He was greatly impressed by her talent.

“Wow.” TOP said when she finished. She smiled at him.

“I’m speechless.” Mr. Yang said staring at her in awe.

She smiled proudly while TaeYang scoffed. “Oh please. Even I can play that.”

She frowned at him. “I never asked your opinion.”

“The deal is definitely on then.” Mr. Yang confirmed. “I’ll be seeing you tomorrow.”

“Yes, of course!” She said happily. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

As soon as he left, she headed straight to TaeYang and punched him. It didn’t hurt, but it took him by surprise.

“Ow! What was that for?” He yelled angrily.

“That was for almost ruining my moment.” She said angrily as she punched him again. “And this is for appearing in my life!”

He rubbed his chest. “If I remember correctly, you were the one who appeared in my life, uninvited!”

She was going to hit him again when he caught her fist just in time. “What did I ever do to you?” She yelled at him. “Why can’t you just let me be happy? Why do you hate me so much?”

Then she looked at TOP. “Thanks for making my life a hell hole. You know, I would have been better off on the street. That way, I didn’t have to associate myself with this asshole you called friend.”

She knew she was being unfair to TOP. He had helped her when she needed it the most. But she couldn’t stand his friend. Never had she met anyone like him! Heck, what the hell was she still doing here? She packed her bag and placed her hat on her head.

She was about to exit the apartment when TOP held her back.

“Don’t go, please.” He pleaded.

“No.” She said firmly. “I have to. I cannot stand another minute with him. Let me go.”

He tightened his grip. “But it’s night. And it’s going to rain soon.”

“I’ll be fine.”

“Just let her go, hyung.” TaeYang said coldly. “At least I’ll get my room back.”

Sofea laughed bitterly. “Hear that? Your friend doesn’t want me here. I don’t even know why I stayed all this while.”

“Tae ah.” TOP said threateningly to TaeYang. “Go to my room. I’ll handle this.”

He pursed his lips crossly. Nonetheless, he did what TOP told him to do. TOP never raised his voice with him, she thought. TOP was older and TaeYang was clearly to blame here.

She scoffed. Who was she kidding? They had known each other far longer than TOP had known her. Of course he would protect him. She was just a stranger in need of help. She knew damn well that if he had to choose, he would without a doubt choose TaeYang.

She was back to square one. She thought she could lean on him, but obviously she was wrong. The tears were threatening to fall again and she rubbed her eyes roughly as if that could make them disappear again.

“Sofea.” TOP said softly when TaeYang left. “Please stay.”

She shook her head. “No.” She said again firmly.

“Please.” TOP said. “At least wait until tomorrow. You can ask Mrs. Kim for another apartment. Then you don’t have to stay here.”

He was right. Why did he always have to be right? She sighed. Another night wouldn’t hurt.

“Fine.” She said finally.

She didn’t see the relieved expression on his face as she headed towards TaeYang’s room. Luckily, he hadn’t moved back in yet.

“Hyung! She’s staying?” TaeYang asked incredulously when he came out from the room.

“Just for tonight Tae.” TOP replied.

“I can’t believe this.” TaeYang muttered.

She heard the conversation through the door and sighed. Just one more night, she told herself. And then you can leave and never see him again! She smiled slightly. She couldn’t wait to get out of here.

Chapter 10 - “Gee, I’m so excited.”

Post by deedee26 on 8/21/2009, 5:55 am

She woke up early the next day and was ready by the time the other two got out from the room.

TOP looked at her in surprise. “You’re done.” He said.

She shrugged. She didn’t want to talk to him, not yet. She was still angry about last night.

“C’mon, let’s go.” TOP said to her.

She went downstairs with him and waited by the building’s door for him to get his car from the garage.

As soon as it came around, she jumped into the backseat. TaeYang appeared a little while later wearing a shade that was much too big for his face.

She snickered. She thought he looked like an ant.

He opened the passenger door and was about to go in when TOP stopped him.

“Sorry bro. But you’re going to have to sit at the back.” He said.

“Why?” TaeYang asked.

“Because my bag’s there.” TOP said and pointed at his bag.

“Why can’t you put it in the trunk?”

“Because… the trunk’s stuck. Yea, that’s it. I can’t get it to open. I’m going to go to the mechanic today and get it checked out.” TOP said rapidly. He was bad at lying, he knew that. But luckily, TaeYang didn’t notice.

“Fine.” He said. He opened the back door and went in.

He grimaced when he saw that she was already sitting at one end. She frowned at him. She scooted closer to the door while he did the same.

TOP watched them through his rearview mirror. He smirked. They were amusing at times.

There was complete silence as he drove towards YG. As soon as the car stopped, Sofea jumped out immediately.

“What’s the hurry?” TOP asked.

She pointed at TaeYang. “I don’t want to catch his disease.”

He glared at her while TOP laughed.

“Hyung!” He said indignantly.

“Sorry man.” TOP said. “It was funny.”

“Whatever.” TaeYang muttered and walked away.

“C’mon!” TOP said and dragged her into the building as well.

They were greeted by a lady that she assumed was in her late 20s.

“Anyonghasaeyo.” Sofea bowed politely.

“Anyonghasaeyo.” The lady greeted her.

“Sofea. This is Mrs. Kim.” TOP introduced.

She smiled at her while Mrs. Kim handed her the badge and her timetable.

“Thank you.” Sofea said.

“Now, if there’s any problem, don’t hesitate to come to me.” Mrs. Kim advised.

“Of course.”

“I’m sure TOP can show you around.” Mrs. Kim said.

“No problem.” TOP replied and put on his best smile.

“Mrs. Kim!” Sofea called out when she was about to turn away.

“Yes?”

“I was wondering if… uh… if living facility is provided.” Sofea asked hesitantly.

She raised her eyebrow. “I thought you’re living with TOP and TaeYang. You’re not happy there?”

She hesitated. What was she supposed to say to that?

“I… uh…”

“We’re very messy.” TOP suddenly cut in. “And really smelly. I saw her puking the other day and she said she couldn’t stand the smell.”

She smiled weakly at him. That wasn’t a very good lie, her expression told him. I know, he replied with a grimace.

“Well, we could give you that apartment…” Mrs. Kim started.

“Yay!” She cheered.

“Except we sold it.”

“What?”

“The company’s planning on buying another apartment.”

“Oh.” Her face dropped sadly.

“I’m sorry.” Mrs. Kim said. “But you’re going to have to stay with the boys for a while.”

She nodded her head sadly as Mrs. Kim turned to leave.

“I’m sorry.” TOP said with a sigh. “That wasn’t a very good lie.”

“It didn’t matter if it was the best lie in the world. I still wouldn’t get it.” She said sadly.

“C’mon!” TOP said trying to cheer her up. “At least you get to spend more time with me.”

“Thanks. But I was looking forward to the apartment.”

“Well, look at it this way then. Now, you can have all the time in the world to fight with TaeYang.” TOP said jokingly.

She looked at him strangely. “Gee, I’m so excited.” She said sarcastically.

He laughed and gave her a tour of the building. They met a few people on the way but she didn’t recognize any of them. TOP said they were famous and that she was lucky to have met them. She shrugged. She wasn’t a fan of any of them so she didn’t really care. They finally stopped in front of Mr. Yang’s office.

“Come in.” Mr. Yang said when they knocked.

“Ah… TOP. Sofea, welcome to YG.” He added proudly.

“Thank you.” She smiled.

“How was your day so far?” He asked.

“Fun. TOP showed me around. I can’t wait to get started.” Sofea said happily.

“I’m glad you said so.” Mr. Yang said with a smile. “I’ve spoken to Chang Orphanage.”

“Oh?”

“And they’ve agreed to let the company adopt you.”

“Really?” she asked surprised.

Mr. Yang nodded. “I was actually on my way to sign some papers.”

“Do I have to come?”

“No no.” Mr. Yang said. “You can stay. You should start practicing.”

“Yes. Thank you so much.” She said excitedly. She could have hugged the man right there and then. She was finally free from the Orphanage. Nothing could dampen her mood now. No, not even TaeYang.

“C’mon then. Let’s go.” TOP said.

“Where to?”

“To meet the rest of the guys.” He said and pulled her into a room.
